In the wake of an excess of cases of Zika in the Florida area, North Carolina officials are launching what they're calling, "a mosquito prevention education campaign." While much of this will entail providing the public with informational materials on the disease itself, they have also compiled a list of things that you can do to protect yourself.
Prevent Lingering Mosquitoes
1. Dump Out Containers
Containers like birdbaths, trash bins, containers hold standing water, and should be dumped every week. Standing water is a haven for mosquito breeding grounds, as it creates ideal conditions for them in which to lay their larvae. Should you have any containers that hold even the smallest amount of standing water, you should dump them AT LEAST once a week, if not more.
2. Use Environmental Protection Agency Registered Products
Whether you are having your lawn treated for mosquitoes, which we highly recommend, or simply spraying yourself with bug repellent ALWAYS use EPA-registered products. This means that they have been tested and approved as safe/effective for human use. All of Lake Norman Pest's products are EPA-registered and safe for your family/pets.
3. Avoid Being Outdoors When Mosquitoes Are Biting
Mosquitoes are prominent during the time of day generally referred to as "dusk." As soon as the heat lifts, even slightly, expect unwelcome pests.
4. Wear Long-sleeved Shirts & Pants
It might seem illogical to wear long pants or sleeves in the summer, but any extra layer of clothing is simply one more layer between you and potential disease carrying pests. Consider lightweight jackets and cotton pants as cool, airy alternatives.
Wishing you a safe, happy remainder of your summer! From your friends at Lake Norman Home Services!
